Not Breastfeeding

Newborns don't have strong sucking power and haven't yet learned to suckle from a nipple. In this case, you need to express milk to feed the baby.

Manual Expression Method: Wash your hands thoroughly before expressing milk. The mother should sit comfortably and place the container of milk near her breast. When expressing, place your thumb above the nipple and areola, your index finger below, and support the breast with your other fingers. Squeeze towards the chest wall with your thumb and index finger, keeping your fingers stationary and not sliding on the skin. Initially, milk may not come out easily, but repeat several times. For babies with a strong let-down reflex, milk may even spray out.

Hot Bottle Expression Method: Take a 1-liter wide-mouthed bottle (make sure the diameter of the bottle opening is no less than 2 cm), fill it with boiling water, and drain the water after a few minutes. Wrap the bottle in a towel and cool the opening in cold water. Place the bottle opening over the nipple, ensuring it is airtight. After a short while, negative pressure forms inside the bottle, drawing the nipple in and slowly drawing milk into it. Once the milk stops flowing, gently press the skin around the bottle to remove it.

Breast Pump Expression Method: Breast pumps can be purchased in stores. Follow the instructions for operation. When there is a lot of milk in the pump, pour it into a prepared container. Note: Sterilize the breast pump before each use.

Baby Spitting Up: Improper feeding posture can cause babies to spit up. Therefore, to prevent newborns from spitting up, the correct feeding posture is essential. If breastfeeding, slightly elevate the baby's head and pinch the nipple with your index and middle fingers, while pressing down on the bottom of the nipple with the other fingers to prevent the milk from flowing too quickly. When bottle-feeding, choose the appropriate nipple and bottle. The nipple hole should be appropriately sized; too large or too small is not ideal. It's best to have two or three small holes to prevent the milk from flowing too quickly. When choosing formula for artificial feeding, you can select formula milk powder.

After feeding, do not play or exercise with your baby. Instead, let your baby rest on your shoulder and gently pat their back. This helps to expel any air swallowed during feeding and prevents spitting up.

Milk that is too cold or unsanitary can also cause your baby to spit up.
