Cloth diapers absorb urine and feces, preventing soiling of bedding and clothes.

Newborns have very delicate skin, so diapers should be soft and absorbent. Old clothes such as cotton undershirts, old blankets, and white gauze can be used as diapers.

Light colors are preferable for easy observation of urine and feces color. Synthetic fabrics should never be used for diapers, as they have poor absorbency and can easily cause skin allergies. With advancements in technology, disposable diapers and "unwashed diapers" are now available on the market. These are characterized by their softness, high absorbency, and waterproof layer. Some are made with special materials and advanced processes that crystallize upon contact with urine, preventing urine from soaking the baby's skin and soiling clothes and bedding.

Homemade diapers should be the right size and thickness. They should not be too large or too thick, nor too small or too thin. If they are too thick or too large, they will hinder the baby's movement. If they are too small or too thin, urine will leak out, and the edges may chafe the skin.

Young parents should frequently observe their baby's bowel movements and urination to change diapers promptly. There are different ways to fold diapers: long diapers and triangular diapers. A cotton diaper pad, shaped like a square and lined with old cotton, should be placed under the single diaper. Cotton diapers absorb more moisture.

Approximately 20 single diapers and 6 cotton diapers are needed for one baby. Diapers should be washed thoroughly to remove dirt and ammonia odor. Use a mild soap or detergent powder when washing. After washing, scald with boiling water to kill bacteria. Dry diapers in the sun after washing; this is essential for sterilization. If it's rainy season and sun drying is not possible, iron them to dry. This will sterilize and remove moisture. Then, gently rub them by hand to soften them, making them more comfortable for the baby. Fold them to the required size and store them aside for easy access when changing diapers.
